Policy muddle sets oil delta on knife-edge:
Reuters and New York Times focused on the unstable nature of ‘peace’ in parts of the Niger Delta and stated that securitiy experts believe that Nigeria needs to strike a delicate balance between military muscle and political negotiation in the Niger Delta if it is to protect its oil industry from a fresh spate of crippling attacks.
MEND opts for international group as mediators:
Coventry Cathedral has been selected by MEND as preferred mediator for negotiations with the Federal Government.
Bank bid to rescue Naira:
The Central Bank of Nigeria concluded arrangements to introduce new policies to stabilize the naira which has been sliding against other currencies.
Falling oil prices may spell doom:
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State said Nigeria could collapse economically if oil prices kept on falling to under 40 $/barrel as 2009 budget is based on 45$/barrel.

Oil prices: Job losses in 09?:
Economists experts said that falling oilprices and thus disruption in Nigeria’s 2009 income projections could lead to job losses, increase in production costs and prices of goods.
Data will tell OPEC if cut required:
Nigeria’s oil minister Odein Ajumogobia said today the amount of oil on the market and the demand should be the “keys” to determine a required cut in production by OPEC.
Niger Delta budget allocation down on 08:
YRD administration received criticism on proposed decrease in government expenditure on the Niger Delta budget despite calls for intervention and massive development.
Captain speaks out on militant hijacking:
Captain Albo Simeon, MT Akuada, gave a detailed account of how the vessel was hijacked by militants last month while waiting for orders at Escravos Bar Anchorage.

Delta The DG of National Commission for Museums and Monuments said yesterday that plans had reached an advanced stage to establish ecomuseums in the Niger-Delta region adding that the project would go a long way in reducing the rate of hostage taking in the region.

The Supreme Court is to deliver a final judgment on legal challenges to President Umaru Yar’Adua’s April 2007 election victory on Friday.
YRD seeks end to immunity for leaders:
YRD said on Wednesday he will ask a constitutional review committee to remove the constitutional right to immunity from prosecution while in office for himself, the vice president, state governors and deputy governors.
UK Foreign Secretary visits:
Wednesday British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, met the Nigerian Foreign Minister Chief Ojo Maduekwe. They reported to have discussed a wide a range of African regional issues.
₦ sags further versus $:
Traders said Nigeria’s central bank sold $190 million to retail banks at its auction yesterday with the local currency depreciating further to 132.50 to the U.S dollar.
JTF dispute Filipino Captain’s hijack claim:
Following the claims by Captain Albo Simeon yesterday, the JTF reacted by stressing out that these were allegations in the campaign against the JTF by militants and their criminal collaborators.
Cholera outbreak kills 10 in Rivers State:
An outbreak of cholera in Kula, Rivers state killed 10 people, Dr. Samson Parker, Rivers state’s commissioner for health, said in an interview in Port Harcourt today.

Government finally admit link to global financial crisis:
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo said CBN decided to participate actively in the daily inter-bank foreign exchange market by buying and selling through the two-way quotes in order to stem the crisis in the foreign exchange market.

Hostage watch:
Confirmation received late Friday night indicated that the British national abducted from his vehicle on Thursday 28 November in Port Harcourt has been released. He was held by unknown attackers for two weeks

Militants are currently holding two British citizens and are refusing to release them until the Federal Government frees Henry Okah, who is on trial facing charges which include treason and gun running. MEND, ‘rescued’ the men after they were taken from a vessel, the HD Ocean Blue by gunmen on 9 September. Chief’s Briefs 10.09.08.
Also – a man was taken from his vehicle on 1 December in the border region of Rivers and Bayelsa States. A
ransom has been demanded. His employers are being very tight lipped about this incident and are releasing no

Last week, 1 Russian and 1 Mexican were taken from the Oceanic Orion. The Russian man who is the captain
