U.S. warns of possible attack on embassies:

The U.S. embassy in Nigeria issued a message on Sunday warning of a possible attack against diplomatic missions located close to the U.S. Consulate General, VI, Lagos.

Related: MEND in a statement, dissociated itself from any planned attack against US embassy in Nigeria, saying it was not targeting US interests in Nigeria.

Police arrest suspected killer of Lebanese national:

Adamawa Police Command said Sunday that suspects were arrested in relation to the killing of Lebanese citizen, Tony Suleiman Saade, on 14 February.

Shell accused of human rights violations:

US laywers filed a lawsuit against Shell for complicity in human rights abuses, including summary execution and torture related to the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa, 1995.

Kidnapping has come to stay – Mitee:

President of MOSOP, Ledum Mitee, said Friday that Niger Delta’s kidnapping and hostage taking had come to stay, saying it had become a “blossoming business venture” .

Explosion rocks Delta University:

Suspected cultists detonated an explosive device over the weekend at Delta State University, (DELSU) in Abraka, believed to be aimed at a lecturer, Dr. Paul Okumagba.

Militants attack in Yenagoa:

Militants attacked members of the JTF guarding the premises of construction firm, Setraco, Yenagoa on April 3. One militant was killed by the JTF while three others escaped.

Union threaten shut down of Port Harcourt port:

Leaders of MWUN threatened to shut down PHC port unless all expatriates, particulary 28 Sri Lankan nationals employed by BUA cement were removed.

UN begins probes of Port Harcourt evictions:

Experts led by UN-HABITATconcluded a fact-finding mission from March 12 to 16, regarding demolition of housing/commercially used structures in Port Harcourt.

British oil worker kidnapped in Port Harcourt:

Gunmen kidnapped a British oil worker, employed by Adamac Industries Ltd, from a hotel bar, East West Road, Port Harcourt, killing 1 police officer and wounding another.

Gunmen blow up houseboat:

Sunday, armed men attacked and destroyed a Daewoo Nig. Ltd houseboat, Igbomotoru, Delta State.

Related: Last week, MEND dismissed an amnesty offer from the government as “unrealistic” and charged that the military was being put on a warpath in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Impact on oil output:

A Central Bank of Nigeria report yesterday said the daily production of crude oil, incl. condensates and natural gas liquids, dropped from December’s output of 2.2 million bpd to 1.9 million bpd.

Death penalty for kidnap rejected by former Justice:

Former Justice of the Supreme Court, Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, argued that capital punishment would not stop kidnapping, it could even lead to more fatal abductions.

Gov: No threat of terrorist attacks on Embassies:

The Federal Government said yesterday that there was no threat of terrorists attacks of any sort on an embassy or diplomatic mission in the country.

Soku Gas Plant shut down days after restart:

Soku Gas Plant operated by the SPDC was shut down for operational reasons, 8 eight days after it came online from a four-month shutdown.

Italian kidnapped in Ebonyi:

An Italian engineer working for Marlum Construction Company was taken by unknown gunmen from his vehicle in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Ransom of N150 million has been demanded.

New judge, same arguments in Okah trial:

The trial of Henry Okah resumed before a new judge on Tuesday with his lawyers again appealing for bail on medical grounds and challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

Nigeria will prosecute Halliburton bribe takers:

FG said citizens allegedly involved in the Halliburton bribery scandal will be prosecuted when their names are received from the U.S. government.

AC wants soldiers’ attack against MP investigated: AC called for an investigation into the beating up, by soldiers, of the Speaker of the northern Kogi state House of Assembly Mr. Clarence Olafemi at the weekend.

EC allocates huge funds to tackle meningitis:

EC’s Humanitarian Aid Department allocated some 4.7 million euros to support efforts to contain the meningitis epidemic as well as treatement for those already affected.

Airspace now has total radar coverage:

Guardian newspaper reported on Tuesday the completion of the multi-billion naira total radar coverage of the country’s airspace.

Can Lagos drive you mad?:

Lagos State Government sent 2,612 motorists, detained for road related offences to Yaba Psychiatric Hospital for evaluations, but none of those tested showed signs of mental illness.

Wednesday cabinet approved draft legislation giving security agencies the power to confiscate property from corruption suspects even after a court has acquitted them, incl. Nigerians abroad.

Halliburton: FG traces $150m to Zurich:

Minister of Justice, Mr Michael Aandoakaa announced yesterday 150 million dollars out of the 180-million-dollar Halliburton’s bribe money had been traced to a Zurich account.

Related: Nigeria asks U.S. for names in bribery case:

FG said Wednesday it had asked the US for the names of Nigerian officials allegedly involed in Halliburton bribery case with a view to prosecuting them,

NNPC officials replaced:

Wednesday a statement said President Yar’Adua had dismissed top managers across the board of the NNPC.

Unrest cost $24 billion oil revenue:

Nigeria lost at least $23.7 billion in oil revenue due to Niger Delta unrest in the first nine months of 2008 according to a report.

Interest rate cut to boost credit:

CBN cut its key interest rate by 1.75% to 8% to boost bank lending and ease the economic slowdown, the first reduction in seven months.

Road accidents claim thousands in 3 years:

Road accidents totalling 18,308 have claimed 5,157 lives and left 13,251 persons injured in Nigeria in the past three years.

Public holidays:

FG declared 10th April and Monday 13th April as public holidays.

And then there’s this…A N98 billion electricity bill:

The nation’s seat of power, Aso Rock, the National Assembly complex, the Army, Navy and the Police Force seem to owe the PHCN N98 billion in electricity bills.
